There is often much confusion over ‘what is a lithograph’ and many people find it difficult to distinguish what a lithograph is in relation to a print. The short answer is that a lithograph is a form of print, a type of printing process during which original works of art can be printed and reproduced. The final product is also known as a lithograph, which is an authorised copy of an original work created by an artist or other skilled craftsmen. The printing process for creating lithographs is different from other traditional methods, mainly because it does not require the print-maker to first etch the image into metal plates. This Pro Hart lithographic print is unframed. Image Size:  50 x 98cm FREE SHIPPING TO QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC – All other locations please make an inquiry for our discounted shipping costs. • An etching begins with a metal plate (usually copper) that has been coated with a waxy substance called a “ground”.  Pro Hart would then create his composition by drawing through the ground to expose the metal.  The plate is then immersed int he acid bath, which “bites” or chemically dissolves the exposed lines.  For printing, the ground is removed, ink is introduced int he the incised lines, and the plate is wiped clean.  The plate is covered with a dampened paper and run through a press under great pressure in order to force the paper into the lines, resulting in the raised characteristic of etching.  To create the colour each etching is then hand painted. • Aquatint is an etching process in which Pro Hart was concerned with tone rather than line.  For this technique, a plate is covered with particles of acid-resistant material such as resin and heated to make the particles stick.  The treated plate is then placed in an acid bath, which bites into the copper that is exposed between grains of resin, yielding a composition marked by texture and tone. Sugar lift aquatint allows you to paint directly on a plate and have that image occur in the final print. The drawing is done with sugar syrup. Then several technical steps are performed in order to lift the sugar from the plate and substitute an aquatint before biting. Screen printing is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicoloured image or design. Traditionally the process was called screen printing or silkscreen printing because silk was used in the process. It is also known as serigraphy, and serigraph printing. Pro Hart silkscreens are in editions of 250 and are personally signed. FREE SHIPPING of unframed editions AUSTRALIA-WIDE For more information please make an inquiry or phone 0411 154 334
