An etching begins with a metal plate (usually copper) that has been coated with a waxy substance called a "ground".  Pro Hart would then create his composition by drawing through the ground to expose the metal.  The plate is then immersed int he acid bath, which "bites" or chemically dissolves the exposed lines.  For printing, the ground is removed, ink is introduced int he the incised lines, and the plate is wiped clean.  The plate is covered with a dampened paper and run through a press under great pressure in order to force the paper into the lines, resulting in the raised characteristic of etching.  To create the colour each etching is then hand painted. With very few sets of the Waltzing Matilda series left, this set of 7 is very collectable.  They are an edition of 100 and are all personally signed by Pro Hart. Each image measures - 12 x 14.5cm and are beautifully framed in silver and white. FREE SHIPPING TO QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC – All other locations please make an inquiry for our discounted shipping costs. There is often much confusion over ‘what is a lithograph’ and many people find it difficult to distinguish what a lithograph is in relation to a print. The short answer is that a lithograph is a form of print, a type of printing process during which original works of art can be printed and reproduced. The final product is also known as a lithograph, which is an authorised copy of an original work created by an artist or other skilled craftsmen. The printing process for creating lithographs is different from other traditional methods, mainly because it does not require the print-maker to first etch the image into metal plates. Screen printing is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicoloured image or design. Traditionally the process was called screen printing or silkscreen printing because silk was used in the process. It is also known as serigraphy, and serigraph printing. This particular unframed silkscreen is personally signed by Pro Hart but is not numbered as it is an artists proof.
