These paintings depict the loss that both Kelly sisters endured as a sacrifice to their brothers’ cause. The Kelly sisters had a very strong sense of family and were totally devoted to helping the Kelly Gang, supplying them with food, ammunition and vital information, but this was certainly at a personal cost.
Authorities kept a close eye on the Kelly home and whenever possible, would follow either sister on horse if ever she left the house. Such personal sacrifice, together with the feelings that can emerge –feelings of loss, grief, pain and anxiety to name a few, I have represented as an empty void, physically felt in the chest.
